Mindfulness | Be Here Now
I’ve been struggling with my practice of being mindful. My brain has a “to do” list that continues to grow and I’m always feeling a little behind.
Last week I was to start a new meditation practice. I was able to listen to only one day (and even then I cut the 20 minutes short because my phone started vibrating with a call from someone who never calls me during the day).
I haven’t been practicing self care in ways that I encourage others to do.
The only blame here is that I allow myself to become consumed with activities that both need and don’t need my attention.
It is easy to become caught up in the immediacy of deadlines and needs of daily life. However, we can’t forget that we must make ourselves a priority.
Mindfulness has become a hot topic in the counseling and self care world. Most of us are able to define the practice but we may struggle with a daily practice.
During this time:
As we approach what is often the busiest time of the year, it becomes easy to multi-task. As we do this, we do not focus upon the current moment. We often miss out on enjoyable moments because we are rushing towards something else.

Oh I agree– mindfulness is hugely challenging to me! My brain is always processing something, but it makes me less aware of how I am actually doing. Thanks so much for this reminder Sheryl!
I love this reminder, Sheryl! I find myself in the same boat. Paying attention to everyone and everything but myself – constantly on the go, planning, thinking, worrying. Taking the time to stop and live in the moment and appreciate it – that’s definitely important to me!
We each just have to remind each other of this! I’ve gone for a few days at a time knowing I needed to slow down, yet I didn’t. This is where I was when I wrote this post.
Ah you’re speaking straight to my heart right now! I’m working on trying to really listen to my body and heart, and figure out when I need to stop or slow down. Good luck to you, friend, in being in the now!
Jessy, I’ve been where you are and I know it’s not always easy to listen to your body. It takes time to “hear” what it needs but you will be able to figure it out. Hang in there!
I needed that today Sheryl! My ongoing to-do list never turns off! Hope you are having a great week.
Shannon, I am the same way and always have a constant to do list in the making. We have to learn to slow down. It’s a practice.
I need to be more mindful of enjoying the now. Thanks for the reminder.
Jessa, I think we all need this reminder. It’s way too easy to become overwhelmed with everything else. Even if you spend only 5 minutes, you have centered yourself a little.
This is very helpful, thank you. I’ve just gotten into meditation recently and I am trying to learn as much as I can about it.
Found your blog through the SITS Share. 🙂
Thank you for sharing this fantastic post. I need to remember to enjoy the now more often. I live in such a big and busy city and I get way too caught up in the hustle and bustle. I need to remember to slow down, relax and enjoy the small things.
I am right there with you. Even after I wrote this post I found myself easily getting anxious in regards to things that need to be done or are occurring. I feel like we all need to continuously remind ourselves to slow down and focus upon now! .
I really do feel it when I don’t meditate. I usually do so before bed and follow it with self hypnosis while sleeping. It does make it so much easier.
