Are You Existing or Living?

Existing or Living

How have you spent the day so far? Have the activities of the day been the routine of daily life or have you been able to enjoy moments. Would you say that you are existing or that you are living?

It can become very easy to fall into the habit of existing. Each day there is work to be done, daily errands to complete and the habits that often occur in simply making it through the day.

Life is busy for most people and it can become very easy to fall into patterns of existence. Days can be so busy that the food is simply swallowed rather than tasted, the words of conversations are only halfway heard and beautiful scenery becomes a backdrop that is ignored and taken for granted.

Living a full and complete life does not have to mean constant travel to foreign countries or daily cooking exotic meals.

Living a full life needs to include time to check in with yourself and acknowledge the activities and things that bring happiness.

Living a full life requires being present.

Living a full life can be difficult as it can seem like there isn’t time, or enough money or that the current life is as good as it gets. Many do not even know where to start in living a full life.

Many people simply exist due to fear. Have you ever dreamed a dream but found it would involve moving to a new city? Have you ever considered doing something different but did not due to what others would think or say? Are you putting off your dreams or hopes for someday so that you can have more money in your checking account or until your children are older or your spouse receives a promotion?

I attempt to regularly challenge myself in regards to questioning if I am existing or living in my daily life. I am one of those who existed for many years. There are also times when I find myself falling into old patterns of doing the same activities or routines out of comfort or habit and sometimes even fear.

The establishment of this blog holds me accountable in regards to living life rather than existing. I am grateful for a space where I can provide inspiration and motivation for others but also have the responsibility of being a model for something more that existing. Establishing a blog has been helped me to hold myself at a higher level of accountability.

If you are a new reader, please know that How to Make a Life can not provide a checklist of how to live. However it is a space that provides ideas, suggestions and tips along with thoughts on the struggles and successes of living. Together, we learn from each other on how to make a life and to live.

Today, I ask you to question if you are existing or if you are living?

Love this. I try so hard to make sure I am living rather than just existing. Most of the time that means doing fun stuff with my family on the weekends since I have to work during the week, but hey, we definitely make the most of every moment!

That is so important to embrace each moment. Working during the week certainly changes perspective of everything!

Punch in the gut this morning (in the best way possible). I am absolutely existing and not living. I needed this perspective today, friend.

Girl, just remember to take care of yourself. Listen to what you need and step back and reevaluate. Sending you a hug! XOXO

Right now I am living. But if you would have asked me that two weeks ago, the answer would have been living. I love this. So important.

    • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life on July 7, 2015 at 6:50 pm

Thank You Nina, I believe we have to go through times in our lives when we have to exist simply because. The reminder is that we need to make sure we don’t stay stuck in the situation. What a difference two weeks can make!! 🙂

Somedays I’m existing but today I’m living. I’ve got some many wonderful things waiting for me this week! This was a wonderful message!

I needed this so badly today – the timing is not coincidental. I am definitely existing… but soon will be living 🙂

    • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life on July 7, 2015 at 6:47 pm

Just remember that there are times in our lives when we need to exist. We just need to make sure the times don’t last too long. It’s totally understandable for you right now. Just take care of you!!

What a good challenge! It’s so easy just to go through the monotony of life. Last night at church the pastor talked about the fruit that comes from what we do. I thought that should be a good test of if we are existing or living!

Always, always, always, touched by your words, Sheryl!
I believe sometimes I’m existing, and those are the days I’m antsy, and so begins my the rainbow spinning wheel in my head. I need to close some tabs, but I can’t.
There are days my life is so full with LIFE that I want to burst with joy. Those are the days I would like to click and paste into my everyday, but then would that become existing? I’m definitely becoming better at being present… I think. 🙂
    XOXO

A lot of the time I feel like I am simply just existing. I’m not able to do the big things I would like to, such as stay home with the kids and travel the world. However, running has helped with that. I’m alone with my thoughts and able to just enjoy what’s around me when I’m pounding the pavement. Never in a million years did I think I would say it, but I so get what people talk about when they say that running is therapeutic.

I love your writing, Sheryl, always. I think most days I’m living, although this is mostly due to only existing years ago and deciding to choose differently for myself. Of course, it’s a balance.. some days are just rough and you do the best you can to make it through 🙂

Great post, as always 🙂 It’s funny, but now that I’m out of Hawaii, I look back and those three years mostly feel like a blur. I was definitely just going through the motions…existing…*waiting* to make an exit. It makes me kind of sad in a way, but I do feel like that time was necessary for some personal growth and {eventual} enlightenment. I’m ready to live again, and I will cherish it more than ever.

Sheryl, it took me 11 days to notice you did! LOL! 😀

  13. Kristyn H. on July 10, 2015 at 9:46 am

Beautifully said! I think we mostly exist to get through the day instead of live it to the fullest. Maybe that is just me, but I really needed this today.

    • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life on August 30, 2015 at 7:12 am

Kristyn, I just realized I had not replied to you on this post – perhaps I’ve been simply existing… Sadly, I think many of us do simply do what we need to do to get through the day. Thanks for your comment.

LOVED this! I’ve been aware for a while that I’ve only been existing and life is way too short for that. I’m so determined to live each day to the fullest. Thanks for sharing!

Michelle, Thank you for stopping by. I do agree that I think life ebbs and flows and sometimes we do have to simply exist rather than live.
