Maker's Mark Makerita

Maker's Mark Makerita Cocktail!

In Kentucky, we always feel it is time for bourbon.

For those not familiar with bourbon, it is America’s only native spirit. Kentucky, the birthplace of bourbon, has the perfect mix of climate, conditions and limestone water for producing the greatest bourbon. As bourbon has become more popular over the past years, production has increased and an interesting fact is in 2014 there was an inventory of 5.6 million bourbon barrels. That means there were more bourbon barrels than people (4.4 million) living in the Commonwealth.

There are over 26 distilleries of various sizes in Kentucky that produce multiple bourbons within all price ranges.  Maker’s Mark, with its well known red wax is often one that most everyone recognizes. If you are new to bourbon, Maker’s Mark is a wonderful bourbon to begin with. As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, I wanted to share this recipe for Maker’s Mark Makerita, one of my favorite summer bourbon drinks (but of course, I think you could make it anytime of the year).  I will note that other bourbons have similar recipes but this is by far my favorite! On a side note, bourbon was not typically my first drink of choice but I have developed a love for it. If you love margaritas, you will love the addition of bourbon. You may have trouble having just one!

    Maker’s Mark Makerita

  • 1 ounce Maker’s Mark Bourbon
  • 1ounce Orange Liqueur
  • 1 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 3/4 light agave nectar

Fill shaker with ice and ingredients. Shake, strain over a highball glass. Enjoy!!

Can we still be friends if I admit thatI have never had bourbon? šŸ˜‰ Based in this recipe though, I think I need to try it! This sounds refreshing and tasty…I can force these going down quite well. Pinning to my Cheers board on Pinterest!

Well of course we can still be friends!!! As I said, bourbon is never my go to drink but I’ve learned about it via osmosis thanks to my husband. This really doesn’t taste like bourbon and will surprise you!
