Who Are You?

I am many things. However, answering that question isn’t as easy as it sounds.

I’m in transition. I am changing and I’m not 100% sure who I am going to end up being. Many of you may feel the same way.

An exercise I encourage individuals to try is to imagine you are looking at yourself in a three way mirror. (I know that’s not always a fun thing to do). If you are using this as a journal exercise, draw a piece of paper into thirds.

For the column on the left, begin to list and describe who you used to be (it can be 10 years ago or a year ago). Describe yourself in regards to the roles you played in life, describe your physical health and appearance. Where you happy? Single? In College or job searching?  What activities were you doing and enjoyed?

For the column on the right, begin to list and describe who you are currently. Be honest in regards to how you feel, what you look like. How do you describe yourself emotionally? Describe yourself in the same details as before.

For the middle column, describe the person you would like to be.  This is your future self. Are there parts of yourself from the past that you miss and would like to have? Are there things you are happy with currently? What would you like to see in yourself in the future? (Whether it be 6 months, 1 year or more).

Take some time to reflect upon who you have been and who you would like to be.

Then when you are asked who you are – you might just be able to answer.
