Own It Check In

As we approach the end of January, do you remember those goals and resolutions you made just a few weeks ago? For the past 8 months, I’ve been participating in Embergrey’s 12 Months of Bliss challenge where each month participants are encouraged to focus upon self reflection and self improvement with a specific challenge.  January’s challenge was to simply focus upon one goal rather than a long list of tasks and resolutions. By focusing upon one goal, it is easier to stay on task and become successful. One goal can feel manageable while many can be overwhelming. Although I have a list of goals for 2016, the specific goal I focused upon was establishing a more consistent workout routine. As my daily schedule changes, creating a morning workout routine would allow for the consistency that I need. The unfortunate nature of this need was that my workout would need to be at 5:00 am. By nature I am a morning person (although not necessarily 4:50 am which is when the alarm goes off). I shared with my husband that this would need to be my new routine and at the same time he began a new routine of attending early morning boxing classes. Together we began to hold each other accountable. To prepare for my workouts, each night I would choose which workout to do (DVD, treadmill or weights) and have it ready to go. Additionally, I prepared my workout clothes and shoes along with water to drink.  I realized early on that it was best to have everything ready so that I could keep on task. This was my first step in beginning to own my goal of creating a new routine. Without fully owning a task, it can be easy to let it go. As I review the past month, I have established a relatively consistent routine with my workout varying between running, weights or following a PiYo or other DVD. There have been changes made in regards to realizing Fridays may have to be my day off and at times I haven’t worked out as hard as I would have liked. Nonetheless, I have been consistent. As I shared earlier in the month, creating new habits and routines takes time. I do not want to say I have totally developed a new routine at this time but I do feel I am on my way. This first goal of the year is leading me towards other goals that are on my list. Take a few minutes to reevaluate your process towards the goals you established at the beginning of the year. Realize it is not too late to restart or make changes if you have not been successful. Own your goals and take the first steps.  Take some time to visit Emily and others who are participating in the 12 Months of Bliss Challenge. Sheryl Signature (1)

Way to go Sheryl! When it comes to exercising, I think this is one area which is the hardest for us to establish and keep. You tried, you’re still doing and only good things will come from it.

Thanks Michelle. I think exercise is a hard habit for everyone to develop. We just have to keep trying.

WOW. I love that you and your husband both got up together to exercise!! Seriously, what support – that’s amazing! Seriously proud of you. You rocked it!!

Well, we don’t actually workout together. I’m too competitive for that. He goes to his gym for boxing classes and I’m staying at home and working out (it takes me too long to get dressed and ready when I do it someplace else)

Love it! I’m a huge believer that you need to have everything ready for that workout in the morning so it’s one less excuse! I’ve been better about listening to my body when it comes to my workouts – i.e.: less high impact and more walking. Even this morning I planned to run but just wasn’t feeling it so I said “that’s okay, I’ll walk” and so I did. Well, until my body was like “no, I really want to run…RIGHT NOW” And so I did and while I didn’t run further than I have been, I ran FASTER and it was awesome!

Katie, it’s so important to listen to what our bodies need. There have been so many times I have pushed my body to run or do a weight circuit when all it really needed was to walk or do yoga. I love following you. Have a great weekend.

Good work with your goals! My goal this year is to pay down a ton extra on my mortgage and so far I’ve been making progress!

I definitely would not get up and work out if I didn’t have my stuff prepared the night before so I feel you on that!
    Keep up the good work.
    xoxo, Jenny

Thanks Jenny. Any distractions like not having things ready certainly puts a halt to a workout, especially at 5:00 am.

You go, girl! I admit that I am enjoying getting up early to workout now. It starts the day off great and it’s a little “me” time before the day starts!

So, confession for the week is I did wake up early two days and choose to not work out – I spent some time just “being” so I think it was needed. Have a great weekend.

Whoa I don’t get up that early, but I have been getting up earlier to have more time in the morning for myself! And I think it’s helping start my day better. I think this year has been tough on me so far, I feel like I have so much to do in such little time to do it in!
