Journal Notes | A Day Off

journal and pen A common thought process from individuals is that one must write in their journal daily to be a “good” journal writer.  Today, I want to share that journal writing should occur when you need to do it. Research does show that consistent and daily journal writing can improve one’s mood and be therapeutic in working through difficult situations. However, taking a day off does not disrupt the value that can come from sitting down and writing. I typically link up with Write or Die Wednesdays as I believe their weekly prompts are wonderful journal writing exercises. Along with the prompt I try to provide educational piece about the value of journal writing. Today, I am taking the day off from the prompt.  I have reasons. It’s the end of the semester and I’ve been getting my grades together. I have started a private practice that is taking time to adjust to. I’ve been emotional with the holiday season. All of this has limited my time. So today, I realized I needed a day off.  Throughout my life, I have gone through periods of time when I didn’t write in my journal. Those spaces of time tell their own story. Life was typically very good or so difficult that I did not have the energy or time to write. If you are a journal writer, or would like to become one, give yourself permission to step back. You do not have to write every day (and bloggers do not have to blog everyday). Empty spaces tell their own story.

This is perfect. Especially during this season– we can all use some undocumented quiet time. Thanks for sharing this, Sheryl!

I think many of us are afraid of quiet time. I’ve been so busy with planning that I’ve begun to crave it. Thanks for stopping by, Daisy!

This all is so very true! I appreciate how you are able to take a step back and not put so much pressure on yourself about blogging or journaling every day- it’s a lesson we all need to learn!
