Is Your Life Well Balanced Or Well Decided?

I have A Lot of things to do.

How many times have you said this in the past month, week or day? Are you looking at the week ahead and feeling unbalanced and questioning how you will get everything done? As I write this post, my table is full of information on practicing self care for an upcoming training this week. There is not a magic formula in regards to finding balance. Balance is something that is not static and changes every day. Our priorities vary depending upon deadlines, needs and (sometimes) desires. For instance, rather than completing my presentation, I am writing this post.                                                                                                                                                                                                             [tweetthis twitter_handles=”@how2makealife”]Your energy goes where your thoughts go.[/tweetthis] It appears that we live in a society that bases self worth on how busy, successful and productive one is. Everyone is busy. As much as there is a push in regards to finding the elusive balance, there is rarely a time when someone proudly states “I sat on my couch all weekend.”  Busy is better. Busy means you are accomplishing something. However, busy is not always productive.

Ask yourself if your life is well balanced or well decided?

Daily you make the decision of where your energy is going to go. [tweetthis twitter_handles=”@how2makealife”]A balanced life comes with purposeful thought and actions. [/tweetthis]   Well balanced lives are typically the ones where the individual has sat down and looked at the week or month ahead. There will be weeks when there is not enough time for everything and everyone. As a result, something will need to have less focus. A friend and I have been meeting at 6:30 on the weekends to walk but there have been times when we have both decided we needed one day in our weeks to not wake up to alarms. The workout and socialization are important to both of us but we equally need sleep.. Today I encourage you to take a look at your life. Where is your energy going? Are tasks and individuals taking more of your time than they should? Do you need to say no to something or someone?  If you need help viewing all of the place your energy goes in life, take some time to complete a balance wheel.

How have you decided to balance your life this week?

I really like the idea of “well decided”–we should actively participate in deciding how we prefer to balance our lives, because that balance will look a little different for each person!

Oh yes, balance is very different for each person and it is about what we each feel is important and deserves our priority.

I love this. It’s so important to make sure you are consistently evaluating your priorities and energy to make sure you are living the most balanced life possible. Like you mentioned with your walks – it can sometimes be best to cut things out to achieve more balance. Great post!

Thanks Brittany! We often feel like we need to cram so much into our lives that we don’t even acknowledge what we are doing or even why we are doing it. Life is always constantly changing.

I love the quotes in these. Totally tweeted to remind myself of later. 🙂

I used to be so good at planning my time and being purposeful in what I wanted to accomplish. It’s definitely something I need to bring back in my life because I’ve been feeling so out of sorts lately!

I so understand this. I find that part of my problem is not taking the time to sit down and prioritize like I want. If it is scheduled, it will happen. Otherwise, I always keep thinking that things will get done (later)

Thank you for this, Sheryl… It echoes a lot of the thoughts I’ve been having myself lately. I feel this overwhelming sense of guilt when I don’t get out there and do all the things and when I’m not a social little butterfly even though all I want is just one afternoon of rest.

I wonder why that is, and why we feel that busy is better. I believe in leading a productive life, sure… but I also want to feel alive and like life isn’t passing me by in my quest to fill every waking minute.

Good food for thought, this. Thank you for sharing and hope you had a wonderful weekend. HUGS

I think the Puritan work ethic has led us all to believe that we MUST be busy to be meaningful. I’ve worked with so many people that have felt that they were “lazy” if they rested. It’s important to rest. Take care of yourself!! It’s ok to stay in sometimes.

Never thought about things this way…thanks for the reality check 🙂

Great post! I have thought so much lately about how busy I am…feeling overwhelmed and like I am spinning my wheels. Thank you for this!

I think if you are feeling like you are spinning your wheels – it’s time to stop a minute and reevaluate. It’s so easy to get in that place because we feel overwhelmed. Take care of yourself. I would love to hear how you are doing.

This is so timely for me. I have been feeling really overwhelmed lately and really need to overhaul my system and find more balance. Thanks for the inspiration!

I’m so glad Christine – just remember it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you start a new chapter of your career. You’re trying to find where everything fits (and if it’s fits). Take time for you.

I think self-care is so important, and if that means saying, no, then it’s okay. I’ve never been one to feel like I always need to be busy. I like to be lazy at times, but I still get done what I deem as important. I don’t feel like my house has to be spotless everyday, so I don’t make that a priority (but others may). If I’m going to busy, I fill my time with fun activities and experiences, instead of things that I “feel” like I need to (like cleaning for the umpteenth time in a week), but don’t really matter on the grand scheme of things or are just things that are made up to fill up my time. Of course, I’ll make sure that I’m not neglecting anything or that it’s effecting my work, but I think my life is pretty well balanced.

That’s a wonderful thing to be able to say you feel your life is well balanced. It’s so important to always check to make sure you are doing what is needed and what you want to do.
