Happiness Stamped | 12 Months of Bliss Challenge
I’ve shared that my word and focus of the year is Thrive. As a result, I am always on the lookout for opportunities and activities which can help me to grow in ever aspect of my life.
When Emily of EmberGrey introduced her 12 Months of Bliss Challenge, I immediately knew this was a challenge that went along with my focus of thrive. #12MofBliss is a monthly challenge that encourages self reflection, loving yourself, random acts of kindness towards others and being thoughtful on a daily basis.
June was the first challenge month and included mailing (snail mail) a card or note of encouragement to one person each week.
My personal confession is that I used to be a card junkie. During high school and college, I was the girl writing notes of good luck during try outs, encouragement during tough times and tried to never miss a birthday. Over time, text messages and emails took the place of those notes and cards. Sadly, I stopped making time for connecting on that level. (And my mailbox showed that others were feeling the same as me.)
As a result, I was happy to make it a point to send some positive mail. I even did more than one card a week as there were instances when more than one person needed encouragement for the week
I began the challenge with a note of gratitude to a friend. In May she was my cheerleader and support during a speech I gave in Lexington. Although I had thanked her, this challenge prompted me to make it more personal.
Another friend was recovering from surgery (thankful it was not cancer) and needed a funny recovery card. Who wouldn’t prefer a martini IV?
Sadly, two friends have had losses during the month. From personal experience I know the power of a handwritten sympathy note over a text.
Two friends have also had birthdays. Although I always make it a point to send a text and send social media love on their days, I purchased some beautiful birthday cards.
I finished up the month sending a card to my friend in Germany. She is 6 months into her 18 month mission and although she is adjusting, she shared at times it is a struggle being away from home. Again, although I send her emails and messages that I love her, there is nothing better than receiving a note from home.
I also became the recipient of a note last week when I received a card from the Vice President at the hospital where I have started working. It was personalized and made me feel welcomed.
Technology has made communication less personable. We text, we make comments on posts but rarely do we slow ourselves down enough to purchase a card or handwrite a note. Many people do not even have stamps on hand. This challenge has helped to remind me of the significance of keeping personal connections. I love the people in my life and taking one small step can mean so much to others.
This challenge reminded me of the increase in mood that one receives from helping and encouraging another. Although I may not continue on a weekly basis, my intentions are to make sending a card part of my regular routine.
I highly encourage everyone to consider taking part in 12 Months of Bliss. Emily will post an introduction post before the beginning of the month. The last Wednesday of each month there will be a link-up to share experiences with the challenge.
Will you take the challenge?

I love this idea! Snail mail is the best and so much fun.
It really is so nice to go to the mail box and have something other than a bill (or junk mail)
I forgot to participate in this but it has encouraged me to start sending mail again! You sent some beautiful cards!
All that matters is that it inspires you to send cards!! It’s never too late to start.
Wonderful – I always have stamps on hand (still pay some bills by snail mail) but funny to know some don’t these days. As expensive as they are, I consider it a treat now to get mail with an actually stamp on it instead of a “beep” via the computer!
Michelle, it really is a treat to open the mailbox and see a card. I know it’s hard to believe others don’t have stamps but so many people do things electronically that it isn’t something that is needed regularly. (I try to always have some). Thanks for stopping by!
I love this idea and how thoughtful it is. I try and write note cards more often now. Definitely more personable putting pen to paper and not just typing it out on a digital device.
It truly does feel different to receive a handwritten card/letter, you know the person took the time to get the materials rather than send off a note while sitting at a stoplight or waiting for dinner at a restaurant. I plan to become more consistent in reaching out to others.
LOVED reading this from you, Sheryl! I can’t tell you how full my heart feels today after reading everyone’s recap posts! That martini IV card is hilarious – if only it were true 😉
Yes, the martini card is so funny (and it was perfect for my friend). I can’t wait to start reading the other posts. So glad you are having this challenge.
Oh my goodness I LOVED this post! That martini IV card is absolutely my favorite.ever! I’m headed over to check out the challenge right now!
Oh Sarah, I think you would love this challenge and would love to have you along for the year with us!!
This is such beautiful inspiration! I absolutely love receiving REAL mail, and now I am inspired to pass along the joy to others. It takes a few minutes to make someone’s day. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your personal story!!
