Comfort

blogtember post: react to the term comfort. As I thought about this post, I realized I could approach comfort in many ways and I receive it in many forms. Over the past months I do not think I’ve been aware of the ways in which I find comfort. Sadly, I’ve just tried to get through each day. I feel the most honest way to approach this prompt is to simply write off of the top of my head. For those of you who like to journal, this would simply be a list or a five  twenty minute write. Please forgive me for the randomness. Comfort is

  • the Ann Taylor Loft sweater I bought last fall and wore throughout my Mom’s illness, to doctor’s visits, hospital stays and over the days she was dying. I realized I loved it so much because I can wrap it around me, like a hug that I gave to myself. Those are the sweaters I look for right now.
  • wearing my hair up in a bun on top of my hair with my work out clothes on and no make-up, laying on our couch. ( I don’t do much of the laying on the couch).
  • was is my Nanny’s Macaroni and Cheese (I have the recipe, I will never be able to recreate it). And let’s face it, gluten free Mac and Cheese is good but it isn’t full of comforting gluten.
  • a warm chocolate chip cookie – and I have found some gluten free that fit into this category.
  • the cabins (review to come next week) that we go to every year. I walk through the door and breath differently.
  • it is the warmth of the sun, laying in a hammock and the sound of the ocean waves.
  • sunrises and sunsets
  • being greeted at our door by our cats, even with their disgruntled looks (where have you been? why were you gone so long?)
  • My home, which is my cocoon, my safe place
  • a massage that leaves you unable to get off of the massage table.
  • walking into a place and having people genuinely greet you with a smile and knowing your name. (Hello to my Starbucks)
  • a warm soak in the bathtub with candles and a glass of wine
  • my Mom’s small silver hoop ear rings that I have found myself wearing once she went to the care center. (Because of them, I rarely wear anything else)
  • during our vows, I thanked my wonderful husband for being that perfect blanket – just warm enough in the winter, light enough in the summer. Comfort is the power of his arms around me – when we greet each other after a long day, during those moments when I feel the world is too cold and not necessarily my friend. Comfort is knowing he is my friend. He is my constant and the center of my crazy hurricane of  a life.

Take a few minutes to think about what comfort means to you.
Happy Friday!!
