Five Kentucky Foods You Need to Try

Tell Me About Your Hometown Link-up from Amanda. This month’s theme was regional food and I have to say I loved reading the variety of foods specific to the different regions of the country. In honor of it being Friday and a long holiday weekend, I wanted to share a few foods you will find in Kentucky.

Derby Pie

1024px-Kentucky_Chocolate_walnut_pie_slice

There is only one true Derby Pie. Created and baked in Louisville Kentucky, Kerns Kitchen has the original recipe safely guarded. You will find many that try to duplicate but nothing tastes like a true Derby Pie. It’s chocolate, pecans, sugar and Kentucky Bourbon and everything that is good.

Kentucky Hot Brown

1024px-Hot_Brown_Kurtz There is absolutely nothing healthy about this heavenly open faced sandwich. You will find turkey on white bread, covered with monray sauce (it’s half  Gruyè and half parmesan cheese). It is baked or broiled until the bread is crisp and the cheese begins to brown. It is then topped with bacon or ham and a tomato. It was created at the Brown Hotel in Louisville at a time when turkey was reserved for the holidays. It is worth every calorie.

Bourbon

Bourbon-Bottles - lane report

Did you know that in ordered to be called Bourbon, it needs to be distilled in the United States, be at least 51% corn mash and aged in new, charred oak barrels?. Yes, this girl may not drink a lot of bourbon but I’ve done the Kentucky Bourbon Trail a few times and have learned a thing or two about this spirit. Kentucky celebrates bourbon via festivals and tastings on a regular basis. I think everyone should become a Maker’s Mark Ambassador, enjoy the beauty of Woodford Reserve’s Distillery and taste the small batch Four Roses!

Burgoo

Burgoo is a spicy stew made with pork, chicken or mutton. This is a slow cooked dish with each restaurant adding its own spices and flavors making it unique.

Ale-8-One

Ale-8-One_Logo Ale 8 is a ginger and citrus regional soft drink bottled in Winchester Kentucky. It’s best out of the  green bottle and in the past could only be purchased in Kentucky. It can now be purchased in some areas of Indiana and Ohio and it’s not uncommon for those who move out of state to ask for it to be shipped. I find the taste difficult to describe but some call it ginger-ale with a kick. The Kentucky Cocktail is a mixture of Ale-8 and bourbon.

What a great idea for a linkup. I will definitely be checking it out.

I’m so glad I found it. Each month has a different theme and it’s so much fun to read about the different places.

Oh I love Ale 8! And thank you, because I know finally know what Burgoo is!
Unfortunately I can’t eat the actual Derby Pie as I am allergic to Gluten, but I make my own for my coworkers every year and they seem to like it! Actually I am planning on making one this weekend for my family who is visiting from Kansas and has never had it before.
Another Kentucky thing is Bourbon Balls. We make those for Christmas in Kansas every year – you know a little bit of Kentucky being represented.

There is nothing like a good Bourbon Ball!! I’m with you and can’t eat the real Derby Pie because of gluten. Truth be told, I can’t eat most burgoo because it has pork in it (and I shouldn’t have pork – which means I probably should be kicked out of the south). Thanks for stopping by! Have a great weekend.

Kicked out of the south! That’s hilarious! Can you still have butter? I think if you can still have butter they will consider letting you stay.

Girl. All of my favorite things! I’ve actually never had Burgoo or a hot brown, though. Everyone else loves hot Browns but I’m not a ham eater! Derby pie, bourbon, and Ale 8 are my absolute favorite treats. And while I no longer drink soda regularly, Ale 8 & bourbon are delicious together! Love this girl!

    • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life on May 23, 2015 at 12:17 pm

Yes, Ale 8 and Bourbon rock! James often makes it at home. I no longer eat pork so it’s been a long time since I’ve had a hot brown ( but it is good). Derby pie on the others hand I could have all of the time, if only there were no calories involved!

I love Ale-8! I often forget that other places don’t have it and disappointed!

Is it bad that out of those I only semi-like the hot brown? 🙂 I have never had Ale-8 but I’m not a ginger ale fan in general.

    • Holly Higgins on May 22, 2015 at 2:37 pm

You should come to Owensboro sometime as they supposedly have the best burgoo and their festival. And it’s only 40 minutes away from Evv.

      • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life on May 23, 2015 at 12:15 pm

Owensboro and this festival is on our Kentucky Bucket list. We will have to make plans. The hot brown is good but it’s so rich that eatting more than a few bites quickly leads to overload! I don’t really think Ale 8 tastes that much like ginger ale but you can taste the ginger!

Oh, I’m so glad you linked up! I love reading about food, especially in the south! That hot brown sounds totally amazing.
