Every one of us has a goal. Some of our goals are small such as reorganizing our closet and others include wanting to change careers.
I recently read an article that reported among individuals who specifically write out and tell others their goals and dreams, only 40% considered themselves successful six months later. The report stated that of the individuals who do not share their goals with others but keep the wishes silently to themselves, the success rate swindled to only 9%,
What we can learn from this study is that stating your goal does gives you a greater chance of achieving it. However, I question why is it so difficult to reach our goals. Are they unrealistic? Do we lack willpower? What makes us give up?
Establishing and reaching a goal is not easy. It takes more than just will power and making the statement of the goal. Goals can be reached and obtained. We can each be successful.
Today I wanted to offer a few suggestions in regards to setting and reaching a goal.
State and Write out your Goal
If you are a blogger, you may want to take part in the Weekly Wishes link up where you are publicly sharing your goal. If you are someone who does not feel comfortable openly admitting your goal, I highly encourage you to write it out in a private journal. There is power in seeing your goal in black and white.
Break your goal down into smaller pieces
Perhaps many people give up on their goals because we have become a society that wants instant success. We want to lose 10 pounds in a month, get in better shape before the reunion and change our job by next week. None of those are unrealistic to obtain but the time frame may be unrealistic.
Establish goals such as working out 2 – 3 times per week and losing 1 – 2 pounds per week. If you are wanting to change your career, ask yourself in what area you want to focus. Once you have set that focus, begin to take steps in the direction. Will you need more education? Do you know others in the field?
Breaking a goal down into smaller pieces will help you to feel more successful.
Remove Barriers
Many goals are set aside because of barriers. Years ago I worked out and attended classes at a gym on a regular basis. However, a job change (further away from the gym) and different work hours made it difficult to keep my old schedule. Rather than change my membership to a gym closer to my house with different hours, I stopped going (and my body felt it).
Is your gym membership at a inconvenient location? Are you desiring a career or job change that may be difficult to obtain where you live? Are you able to take online classes? Although every singer dreams of being discovered they can not be discovered if they do not regularly sing or take the chance to travel to a larger city where they can showcase their talent.
Stay Focused
Every goal and dream has a set back. There will be a week where there isn’t time to work out. It should be expected there will be rejections. If your goal is truly something you desire, you must be wiling to accept roadblocks along the way.
Reevaluate Your Goal
After a set amount of time (6 months at a minimum), reevaluate what you are hoping to obtain and reach. What have you accomplished along the way? Have events happened that made it difficult to reach the smaller goals? Is this goal still something that you want to reach?
Do you continuously find yourself with the same goals and dreams yet never achieving them. I shared this post on what was holding me back in regards to my health and fitness.I challenge you to reevaluate why you have not met them and make a plan for the future.
