Christmas Home Tour

Today is when I share with you that I have a slight addiction to Christmas ornaments and decorations. To the fact that over the years, I have amassed such a collection that at the most I have had five trees in the house. New trees were needed simply because I had so many ornaments that I wanted to display. Over the years decorating for Christmas has always been fun for me as I love to design and decorate. We’ve typically had open houses or parties and that always gives an incentive to pull everything out. Today I want to share a little of our home along with some of my favorite and memorable items. House at Christmas The front hallway contains one of the favorite wreaths I have made. I love the bronze and gold colors. In addition to actual Christmas trees, I’ve also acquired Christmas trees for my tables. Bronze wreath and trees front hallway bronze wreath I consider our living room the more formal or fancy tree as it includes more gold and bronze ornaments and of course another Christmas tree! Formal Living Room Tree Living Room bronze and gold tree A few weekends ago I held a brunch for several friends and decorated the table in red, white and green. Dining Room Table For the tablescape I included vintage ornaments I inherited from my Nanny. I’ve considered making a wreath with the ornaments but am reconsidering and may only use them for display. Ornament Tablescape These cute stockings included gifts for each of my guests including hershey’s kisses, and a candy cane. Place setting with stocking I didn’t leave the buffet table out in regards to decorating. The bronze pinecone  tree is one of my favorites and typically sits on the dining room table when we don’t have guests. Buffet table Our family room tree is our largest tree and includes both sentimental and colorful ornaments. Family Room Tree   Happy Birthday Jesus is one of James’ favorite ornaments. It’s a great reminder of the season and I love the How To Get To Heaven discussion. HowToGetToHeaven ornament And every southern tree has to have some monograms! Monogram Ornament Our kitchen tree started out as a small 3 foot tree on our counter at our first home but after a few years of discovering adorable cooking related ornaments, the tree size had to be increased. This tree was originally my Mom’s and it fits perfect in the smaller space as it is narrow and tall. Kitchen Tree We have a variety of wine glasses and more Starbucks coffee cup ornaments than we need! J Monogram Wine Glass On my baker’s rack, I’ve set up a Night Before Christmas Shelf. This includes a book that James has had since he was little and an ornament that my Nanny gave me when I was five (I remember shopping with her at the department store McAlpins , now Dilliards, and asking for it).  It’s not a fancy ornament but full of memories. Night Before Christmas Shelf Night Before Christmas Ornament In addition to Christmas trees, we’ve collected a variety of Santas and I haven’t photographed our team tree decked out in UK blue and all types of sports related ornaments. During my Mom’s illness and during my first year of grief, I decorated because I felt that I needed to. It was normal and as many grieving individuals do, I needed normalcy. Last year, due to a vacation and not having plans for a party, James and I decorated the outside and hung stockings but did nothing else. Although I missed the decor, I was tired and chose to not push myself. The decorating I have done this year is nothing like I have done in the past. I’m uncertain if I will ever return to the days of decorating my chandeliers and draping garland down the banisters. I share this as I hope anyone reading this who is dealing with their own grief and losses will realize that we do view the world differently after a death. It does not mean we can not still enjoy, it simply means we view from a different perspective. Finally, for those of you who I have been communicating with after my more things than I need post, I made the decision this year to let go of a full ( large size) bin of my snowmen collection. This was a collection that I have not used in almost 6 years. Following the question if it brought me joy, it no longer did and I realized it needed to go.

Hoping you are surrounding yourself with Christmas items that bring you joy!

Thank You Lindsay. I’ve had several friends discuss the same thing at Christmas but we never get around to it. I might could make a side business from it! Hope you have a great day!

May not be steady work but I’m certain people would pay for the service. 🙂

Your table is absolutely gorgeous! What a festive-looking home you have! That takes a lot of work, I’m sure, to set up, but if you enjoy the work, it’s definitely worth doing!

If I put all of the time together, it probably takes one full day to do everything. I pace myself and have developed a system over the years of what ornaments go to what tree and it does make it somewhat easier. It just gets a little crazy when I decide to change things around.

Target is such a dangerous place!! I’ve allowed myself to look at their decorations this year but I haven’t purchased. Trees are a weakness! Thanks for stopping by Karen. Hope you have a great Christmas.

How festive! I love that you spoke about the role of traditions in the grieving process, and how a sense of normalcy is something grieving people need. I admit that much of what I do with my own kids (the holiday traditions) is also my own yearning for my family. I’m not grieving them, but I do miss their presence around the holidays. So I can only imagine how important traditions are during the grieving process. (((hugs and Happy Holidays to you!)))

Thank you Shelly. I always feel it’s important to include a little education in my posts. I think that people forget how difficulty the holidays can be for anyone who is missing their family (whether it be due to death or miles). Merry Christmas my friend. I hope it’s wonderful.

Your house looks so cozy, especially in that last picture! And you can never have too many Starbucks cup ornaments! 🙂 Funny you mention stores that have since changed names–I just referenced Clover the other day! Not sure if you guys had that in the South… I think it’s Kohl’s now. But it’s so funny how those details stick with you.

    • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life on December 22, 2015 at 10:26 am

No, we don’t have Clover here but we do have Kohls. McAlpins was a big store chain for awhile but was bought out by Dillards. Thank you for understanding about the Starbucks ornaments!!

  14. Anne @ Love the Here and Now on December 21, 2015 at 7:47 pm

Your home and trees are gorgeous! So, so pretty. I need you to show me how to wrap a tree in ribbons…yours looks so soft and beautiful. When I do it the poor trees look gagged and bound!!

    • Sheryl @ How to Make a Life on December 22, 2015 at 10:24 am

The best way I can describe doing it is to almost lay it on the tree and simply tuck it into branches. There have been many years when I’ve had to redo it because it looked bound! 🙂 People are also doing ribbon vertically on the tree but I’m not so sure I like it that way – and it also takes away hanging space for the ornament.
