You Find Out Who Your Friends Are

<![CDATA[

This morning I had a friend call me in tears. She had minor surgery this week and was having complications and needed to get to the doctor. Her husband was unable to leave work and her family does not live nearby.
Of course I took her. That’s what friends do. True friends aren’t just there when life is beautiful but are also there when you are in the ditches, mud all over your face and wearing a pair of old sweat pants.
I should add that throughout the morning she kept apologizing to me and saying how much she appreciated me. I might add that this is one of my dearest friends and as I told her, if my client hadn’t canceled this morning, I would have canceled my client for my friend.
All of this made me think of the Tim McGraw song that came out a few years ago with the following chorus.
You find out who your friends are
Somebody’s gonna drop everything
Run out and crank up their car
Hit the gas, get there fast
Never stop to think ‘what’s in it for me?’ or ‘it’s way too far’
They just show on up with their big old heart
You find out who your friends are

In many ways I am honored that my friend finds our friendship close enough that she could call me and ask if I could get her to the doctor in 40 minutes (we live near each other). It is only true friends that you can feel comfortable doing this with.
Over the past year and throughout my previous posts, I have shared the blessing and power of friendship that I have been given. I have truly discovered who my friends were. However, there have been times in my life when I have been let down by friends and felt somewhat betrayed and simply hurt. I share all of this only because a few weeks ago, in a evening of feeling as if everything in my life was bad and James and I both being frustrated with each other – I had the thought ” I don’t have anywhere to go.” I have no idea why this thought came into my head as James and I were not fighting. However, this simple thought led me into a crying tailspin.
When your Mom and Grandmother are around – you always have a home to go to. When you have your family, hopefully they are always going to take you in. My thoughts that night compounded upon each other – there was no one.
To bring some humor to the situation – James pointed out that I could go to his parents. ” They are not MY parents.” I cried. To which he responded, “My Mom lives with my Dad – you think she wouldn’t understand.” His humor does make me laugh.
He then proceeded to point out that I do have people. And he is right.
I have found out who my friends are. They have sustained me, given me strength when I didn’t think I would make it, been my biggest cheerleaders.
My friends have often dropped things for me to be there – they’ve taken phone calls from a crying me (who was stuck in a Florida airport and James was in Arizona) to care for my cats. They’ve driven a few hours to sit by my side with my Mom. They’ve fed me. They’ve changed their schedules to meet with me when I was having a difficult week.
There truly isn’t much more a girl could ask for.
So for my friend who needed me this morning – this was only a small token that I could give back to you. As I told her – this is what friends are for.
I’m hoping you have some friends who would drop anything for you. If you do, take a few minutes to thank them.

What a beautiful post. You have just inspired me to contact my good friend to thank her for being there at my bedside when I woke up from surgery last Feb. I have thanked her in the past but your post made me want to call her right now. Thank you.

Trish, I’m so glad that this post provided some inspiration. We can never thank our friends enough for the friendship they bring.
